Charles George Heffer was born in Swaffham Prior (Newmarket Q2-1893 3B:537), baptised in St Mary's Swaffham Prior on 11th June 1893, son of Henry and Maria HEFFER (née BENSTEAD).
His name varies between Charles George and George Charles throughout the records.

1901 census...George, aged 2 (this is patently incorrect) he was at Mutton Row, Swaffham Prior, with his father Henry J HEFFER [39] horsekeeper; his mother Maria [33]; brothers Henry J [10], Robert E [8] and Arthur J [3 months]. All were born in Swaffham Prior.

1911 census...George, aged 17 a farm labourer, was at Mutton Row, Swaffham Prior with his parents, brothers Henry, Ernest and Arthur and sister Mary [7] born in Swaffham Prior.

From the war Diary of the battalion:-
The day was quiet. At 6 p.m.in conjunction with 9th Essex we attacked and advanced our line to the Amiens Defence Line the Battn. occupying that portion from E.28.c.8.8. to K.4.b.8.4. with advanced L.G. Posts on 105 contour in E.28.d. The attack was completely successful and we were in position by 8 p.m. Our casualties were very slight. 22 prisoners and much material were captured.
Our total casualties in the operations of 9th and 10th were:-Capt CDH Wooster MC., 2nd Lt SP Wadson and 2nd Lt WG Lippiatt killed. 2nd Lt L.Donne-Smith wounded. 18 O.R. killed. 90 O.R. wounded, 14 O.R. missing.
We captured, in two days, 1 field gun, 3 trench mortars, 4 heavy and 20 light machine guns.


2 of the missing must have been presumed dead since CWGC has 3 officers killed and 20 other ranks (10 each day)

and on the memorial of the Zion Church, Swaffham Prior.
